Sitar – Ravi Shankar. Strings, Brass, Woodwind – The London Symphony Orchestra. Released in a standard JewelBox with a 4 page foldout booklet.
Concerto for Sitar & Orchestra is a studio album by Indian musician and composer Ravi Shankar with the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) conducted by André Previn. It was premiered at London's Royal Festival Hall on 28 January 1971, and subsequently released in Britain and America. Shankar began composing the work, his first concerto, after receiving a commission from the LSO in mid November 1970.
Bought the original West Meets East on Angel 30+ years ago; with grooves worn to inaudible, bought CD. Recordings are real originals: Shankar was already a star in India & Menuhin was one of the premier American classical violinists when they collaborated. A better 60s culture icon than Jefferson Airplane or even Sgt. Pepper.
Ravi Shankar, who has died aged 92 after undergoing heart surgery, was the Indian maestro who put the sitar on the musical map. George Harrison called him "the godfather of world music" and it was Shankar's vision that brought the sounds of the raga into western consciousness. He was thus the first performer and composer to substantially bridge the musical gap between India and the west. Shankar's distinction as a sitar player lay in his brilliant virtuosity, creativity and musicianship. In the west his name is synonymous with the music of India. Ravindra Shankar – in Bengali, Robindro Shaunkar – Chowdhury was born in the holy city of Benares, now Varanasi. The youngest of five sons, he belonged to a family of Bengali Brahmins from Jessore, now in Bangladesh, who were much influenced by the reformist ideas of writers such as Rabindranath Tagore, one of the major figures of the Indian Renaissance.
His work with Yehudi Menuhin on West Meets East earned them a Grammy, and he was commissioned by the London Symphony Orchestra to write a concerto for sitar and orchestra. He later wrote a second sitar concerto for the New York Philharmonic under the direction of Zubin Mehta. He composed works for flautist Jean-Pierre Rampal, cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, shakuhachi master Hosan Yamamoto and koto virtuoso Musumi Miyashita. The symphony appeared on CD (The Independent deemed it a resounding triumph), and there are DVD releases of his feature-length 1968 documentary Raga and a film of his 2011 Escondido concert. The music never stopped and it is hard to believe it will now. In 2011 the Los Angeles Times ventured that Music may not have, precisely, saints.

Menuhin had championed Indian music in the West for years before learning how to play it. His sensitivity to the material is demonstrated on "Sawara Kakali," particularly during the tremendous duet that closes the track.
