Violinist Christian Tetzlaff moved to Finland's Ondine label with this 2011 release, perhaps reflecting the thinking of his new employer with the program. It combines the most standard of standard works, the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64, with two fairly unusual works by Schumann, the Fantasy for violin & orchestra, Op. 131, and the still rarer Violin Concerto in D minor, WoO 1. Both works were negatively impacted by the spreading word of Schumann's descent into madness, and the concerto was completely suppressed by his successors.

The Estonian Paavo Järvi held the position of music director for the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra from 2006 to 2013 and assumed the position of conductor laureate at the beginning of the 2013–2014 season. Paavo Järvi enriched the orchestra with new musical aspects: for example through his commitment to Nordic repertoire and great Romantic and post-Romantic literature. They also received the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik, quarterly critics choice award for their recordings of the Mendelssohn and Schumann Violin Concertos (with Christian Tetzlaff).

Mendelssohn & Schumann: Violin concertos/Tetzlaff. Artistic Quality: 10. Sound Quality: 10. Christian Tetzlaff is an absolutely fabulous violinist, and this repertoire suits him perfectly. The couplings are perfectly chosen and even more impressive, if possible. Schumann’s two clumsily orchestrated concertante works for violin and orchestra are full of beautiful ideas, but they so often bog down in what can seem like tiresome repetition. Tetzlaff plays with evident affection, making light of the difficult and often unforgiving solo parts, while Paavo Järvi does everything that he possibly can with Schumann’s accompaniments. Superb engineering, ideally balanced, puts the finishing touch on an irresistible release.
