Secretly Canadian, the foursome’s first go at a record label, was founded in 1996. Without any experience, Weddle, Cargill, and the Swansons figured it out as they went, fumbling along the way. At the time there was no infrastructure for labels in Bloomington, or greater Indiana, and the internet was nearly nonexistent.

Secretly Group is a family of American independent record labels based in Bloomington, Indiana. The group is made up of Secretly Canadian, Jagjaguwar, and Dead Oceans. Secretly Canadian, the first of the labels, was formed in 1996 by brothers Chris and Ben Swanson, Eric Weddle, and Jonathan Cargill. Their first release was a re-issue of an album by June Panic.

Founder Darius Van Arman started Jagjaguwar in 1996 to release an album by his band The Curious Digit, and from those humble beginnings, an indie rock powerhouse was born. By 1999, Chris Swanson, one of the owners of the label Secretly Canadian, became a partner in Jagjaguwar, and the two labels remain closely connected to this day, working out of the same offices in Bloomington, Indiana.
