Out of Reach is the tenth studio album by the German krautrock band Can, released as an LP in 1978 on Harvest Records. The band's previous album Saw Delight was the first to include former Traffic members Rosko Gee and Rebop Kwaku Baah. Founding bassist and producer Holger Czukay was reduced to the position of making electronic sounds as Gee took over the bass duties.
All but unknown to most but the most hardcore Can fanatics, 1978's Out of Reach is one of the group's rarest albums. This is due in large part to the fact that bassist Holger Czukay left the band before the recording sessions, and drummer Jaki Liebezeit has a greatly reduced role, leaving most of the rhythm duties to ately Reebop Kwaku Baah. As a result, many fans don't consider this a true Can album. They have a point, and there's no doubt that this is not one of Can's better albums. However, it's not an album to be dismissed outright.
Out of Reach, from 1978, failed to make the cut. For 25 years, whenever this record has been reissued, it's been as a questionable semi-bootleg mastered from vinyl, and never endorsed by the band. Apparently, Can want to keep this one under rug swept. How bad can it be? It's not a total loss. In fact, from one perspective, Out of Reach is an inspiration. Knowing that the godlike musical force that recorded the Tago Mago - Ege Bamyasi - Future Days troika could, only a few short years later, sink to this level of awfulness makes anything seem possible. Perhaps our lives are.
