Following the band's tour in support of their 1982 live album Three Sides Live, Genesis took an eight-month break before they regrouped in the spring of 1983 to record a new studio album, their first since Abacab (1981). It marks their first written, recorded, and mixed in its entirety at their own recording facility named The Farm

Genesis is the twelfth studio album by Genesis, recorded and released in 1983. The shapes are from the Tupperware "Shape O Toy Ball. The toy consists of a blue and red hollow ball with different shaped holes cut into the surface, into which the shaped pieces can be inserted. Genesis (named for the fact that all three band members composed every song on it together) marked the beginning of Hugh Padgham's formal production assistance after engineering Abacab.

Genesis is the twelfth eponymous album by the pop rock group Genesis and is their twelfth studio album. To avoid confusion with its title, most of the followers of the group refer to this album as Shapes for the geometric shapes of its cover, or simply as Mama, the name of the first song of the album. The album is called Genesis because the three members of the group composed all the songs collectively, in the same way they worked in the past, before the departure of Peter Gabriel from the band and not individually as in their previous works.

Trespass is Genesis' best album ever by far. It has great songwriting and the performance is stellar. This album was my first introduction to Genesis about thirty years ago, when I was fourteen years old! Even today, this album sounds as beautiful and mysterious as it did back then. This album has songs that are integrations of progressive rock and more commercial rock/pop songs. A mix of long and short Genesis songs is the perfect album mix! Hardly any filler.
