Goths is The Mountain Goats' 16th studio album, released on 19 May 2017. A big instrumental step by the band –which built its reputation on bare-bones, acoustic guitar-centric songs– Goths is the first Mountain Goats album not to feature any guitars (besides bass guitar). In an interview about the album with Paste Magazine, frontman John Darnielle said he had been writing songs on keyboards rather than guitar, which helped him stay out of the melodic comfort zone he finds in guitar. Loosely a concept album, Goths explores goth subculture from a variety of angles, including having one’s identity grow away from said subculture with age. Goths Q&A. Goths, the latest from the Mountain Goats, is about the journey between life in the dark and death in the light, and ultimately trying to find a home somewhere between. That elusive, literary home for John Darnielle-the lead singer and songwriter of the Mountain Goats for 26 years-has been a theme in his writing lately. Whether on his 2015 album Beat the Champ or in his 2017 novel Universal Harvester, Darnielle writes about the larger, decades-long journeys that play out in the rural American diaspora.
The Mountain Goats (stylized "the Mountain Goats") are an American band formed in Claremont, California by singer-songwriter John Darnielle. The band is currently based in Durham, North Carolina. For many years, the sole member of the Mountain Goats was Darnielle, despite the plural moniker.

The Mountain Goats – Goths. Mostly the diehards will enjoy this unique flight of fancy from a set of familiar musicians. The album’s also vocally distinguishable from the Mountain Goats’ prior releases, and not just for its use of the Nashville Symphony Chorus. Darnielle is more apt to simmer sweetly here, even croon, rather than froth to the raw, nasally boil he’s known for. The vocals on the album are more subdued, their tone less intense. A track like Wear Black has more in common with a velvety Sam Smith ballad than the aching and/or defiant vibe of prior tunes.
On the whole, Goths is the Mountain Goats’ most musically impressive record in years, and one of the best in their entire discography. As impressive as the music is, the specificity of the album’s subject matter felt a bit alienating at first. After my first listen, I found Goths enjoyable on a very basic level, but ultimately unaffecting compared to some of the band’s more emotionally potent albums. The album seems to live in the past, but seems to be communicating these vignettes of life as a goth as representative of adjacent movements happening in the present. For example, Andrew Eldritch is Moving Back to Leeds, the album’s Bandcamp-released lead single, is less about the Sisters of Mercy frontman himself and more about those old fans who, after years of his absence, still flock out to his show to cling to some figment of their youth.
