On their fifth album In Your Own Sweet Time, they lightheartedly explore new genres and stylistic cues, pulling in a lot of playfulness, and deliver hook after hook across an instantly enjoyable set of tracks. The same impulsively rapturous songs about love, drugs, sex, and storytelling the band has told on previous albums remain, but with a spontaneity that leads their indie roots into conversing with danceable beats, rhythms, and inventive explorations of worldly music. These are the opening and closing tracks respectively, and both lay out the repeatable quality of the Fratellis new album. The opener brings the familiar immediately: a jubilant atmosphere and piercing musicianship; the closing track sees the band push ahead from and with the album: a lengthy, droning song that represents the entirety of the album.

And yet here’s In Your Own Sweet Time. Which I expected little of at first. But several listens in have taught me to enjoy it more than any Fratellis album since their debut. It starts full throttle with what sounds like a Scissor Sisters imitation, a catchy little number with a bad joke title ( Stand Up Tragedy ). And it speeds on through to a 7-minute denouement with a plain bad title ( I Am That ). Sugartown has a sweet 60s pop melody and could maybe have been a hit in that decade with some better singing. The Next Time We Wed is a breathless synth-rock adventure with a blues progression and some country guitar licks – a mishmash that curiously works. Laughing Gas at first seems almost the aural equivalent of inhaling that gas, a rush that’s heady and addictive at the time but will soon be forgotten about once it’s over; it’s ultimately more satisfying though.

Since their debut just over a decade ago, Scottish alt pop band The Fratellis have been churning out infectiously catchy pop, with enough jangly guitars and power chords to appease the indie kids, but also boasting a much wider appeal. And In Your Own Sweet Time, their fifth record, is no different. From the first track, the irresistible Stand Up Tragedy, throughout nearly the entirety of the record, the band keeps up the momentum. The only low point is the slow tempo album closer, I Am That
