We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions is the fourteenth studio album by Bruce Springsteen. It peaked at number three on the Billboard 200 and won the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album at the 49th Grammy Awards. This is Springsteen's first and so far only album of entirely non-Springsteen material and contains his interpretation of thirteen folk music songs made popular by activist folk musician Pete Seeger

We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions is an unusual Bruce Springsteen album in a number of ways. First, it's the first covers album Springsteen has recorded in his three-decade career, which is a noteworthy event in itself, but that's not the only thing different about We Shall Overcome. He rounded up 13 musicians, including some who played on those 1997 sessions, and did two one-day sessions in late 2005 and early 2006, swiftly releasing the resulting album that April. As Bruce stresses in his introductory liner notes, these were live recordings, done with no rehearsals, and We Shall Overcome does indeed have an unmistakably loose feel, and not just because you can hear the Boss call out chord changes in a handful of songs.

Sticker on front says: "13 traditional songs associated with the legendary Pete Seeger. Featuring "Pay Me My Money Down" and "John Henry".

We Shall Overcome - which was recorded live in Springsteen’s New Jersey home with a fourteen-piece band, including horns, banjo, fiddles, washboard, organ and accordion - is his most jubilant disc since Born in the . and more fun than a tribute to Pete Seeger has any right to be. But as on Born in the .

Pete Seeger turns 87 in a week, and it's the revivalist and populariser of America's folk heritage rather than the folkie songwriter that Bruce Springsteen celebrates in his 21st and most family-friendly album. Here are 13 time-hallowed songs sung by Americans from the original frontier pioneers to the civil rights marchers of Kennedy's New Frontier, but no versions of If I Had a Hammer, Turn Turn Turn or Where Have All the Flowers Gone; Springsteen didn't get where he is today without spotting potential banana-skins. Drawing as much from the spiritual tradition as Appalachian mountain music, We Shall Overcome (the title track of which Springsteen first cut for a 1997 Seeger tribute album) sounds like a classic of roots Americana to rank with anything by Dylan and the Band, Dr John or Leon Russell, while the match of Springsteen's huskiness and the hootenanny plangency of fiddle, banjo.

Both bonus cuts are excellent and should have been on the album proper.

The album bristles with the sound of fiddles, banjo, accordion, pump organ, horns and Bruce's boozed-up hollers to the band. All of which can be seen on the 30 minute DVD that complements the album.
