The Human Menagerie is the debut studio album by Cockney Rebel, released in 1973. It was produced by Neil Harrison. Those first two albums were heavily orchestrated. I was 22 years old, at Abbey Road with a full orchestra and a choir for songs like "Sebastian". oh, it was magnificent for a young ma. If The Human Menagerie, Cockney Rebel's debut album, was a journey into the bowels of decadent cabaret, The Psychomodo, their second, is like a trip to the circus. Except the clowns were more sickly perverted than clowns normally are, and the fun house was filled with rattlesnakes and spiders. Such twists on innocent childhood imagery have transfixed authors from Ray Bradbury to Stephen King, but Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel were the first band to set that same dread to music, and the only ones to make it work. The Psychomodo was also the band's breakthrough album.

The Human Menagerie is the debut studio album by Cockney Rebel, released in 1973. After training as a journalist for three years, Steve Harley embarked on a musical career, beginning with "floor spots" in London folk clubs in 1971. Unlike the Psychomodo, there was obviously more care taken in the remastering of this album. The music hangs together better throughout the album. Whether it's because The Psychomodo sells more copies and therefore it was thought that more effort was needed with The Human Menagerie I don't know but unlike the Psychomodo, this is worth the expense even if (like me) you own it in all of it's previous incarnations. Even though Steve Harley (with or without Cockney Rebel went on to a more successful period, this album shows that the potential was there right from the beginning.
