Kenny Burrell is just such a person. In fact he's more – he's living history, past, present and future. What was it like at the famous session you co-led in 1958 while recording the Kenny Burrell and John Coltrane album? That was what we called a blowing session put together by Prestige. I was happy to be in the circle of people called for that. We were each expected to bring in one or two songs. In the process, there’s no time for rehearsals. You run something down once or twice and record it. I had to be on my toes, but was with great people.

Kenneth Earl Burrell (born July 31, 1931) is an American jazz guitarist known for his work on the Blue Note label. His collaborations with Jimmy Smith produced the 1965 Billboard Top Twenty hit album Organ Grinder Swing. He has cited jazz guitarists Charlie Christian and Django Reinhardt as influences, along with blues guitarists T-Bone Walker and Muddy Waters. Burrell is a professor and Director of Jazz Studies at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music.

This out-of-print LP from the obscure AudioSource label features Burrell performing nine jazz standards ranging from "Night in Tunisia" and "A Child Is Born" to "Struttin' with Some Bar-B-Que" and even "When the Saints Go Marching I. The personnel varies but often includes trumpeter Oscar Brashear, Patrice Rushen or Pete Jolly on piano and occasionally the reeds of Marshall Royal, Jerome Richardson, Don Menza and Matt Catingub.
