Charlie Haden in 1981. Background information. Charles Edward Haden. The album featured choral contributions from the Oakland Youth Chorus. In 2005, Haden released the fourth Liberation Music Orchestra album Not in Our Name, a protest against the US invasion and occupation of Iraq. In 1982, Haden established the Jazz Studies Program at California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California.
Charlie Haden’s first album as a leader was 1969’s Liberation Music Orchestra, and the bassist has been revisiting the project ever since. The concept of the project is to take a big band and record songs devoted to issues of human rights and political liberation, whether expressed in original compositions or revolutionary anthems from Spain, South Africa and Latin America. Not in Our Name is devoted to American music and current political tensions . And while "Not In our Name" moves into a big band arrangement, with horns picking up the theme and powerful solos (most notably from guitarist Steve Cardenas), there's an edge to this not commonly found in music.
The first Liberation Music Orchestra formed in 1969, to play instrumental-jazz remakes of freedom songs from the Spanish civil war in protest against the American bombing of Cambodia. It was reignited by Ronald Reagan's foreign policies in 1982, came back for George Bush Sr in 1989, and again last year in the wake of what leader and bassist Charlie Haden saw as George Dubya's theft of the presidential election. But agitprop this isn't. Haden and arranger Carla Bley embrace humanity by mirroring diversity in music; they counter dogma through wit, warmth and ambiguity. But Not in Our Name balances Bley's quirkiness, Haden's seriousness, strong compositions and spirited improvisation more successfully than on any Liberation Music Orchestra album since the first one. It isn't an angry outburst - more a passionate eulogy for American virtues strong enough to survive times like these.
This is a beautiful album, one that makes a case for vision, creativity, and concern. Not in Our Name pulls together a wide range of aesthetic possibilities that all reflect the American consciousness and simultaneously mourns the passage of it while resisting with a vengeance that nadir. While a jazz recording, this album crosses the boundaries of the genre and becomes a new world music, a new folk music: one to be celebrated, perhaps even cherished. Bassist Charlie Haden reactivated the concept behind his late ’60s Liberation Music Orchestra for this 1982 studio project, built around songs from the Spanish Civil War and other 20th century civil conflicts in the Spanish and Portuguese diaspora, including Chile and El Salvador.
Haden's music, and the LMO, has always been folk music-a jazz of the Americas both North and South. This is apparent on this recording as well as his early-'60s work with Ornette Coleman. Perhaps for many resistance is futile, but for Charlie Haden resistance is fertile. Visit Charlie Haden on the web. Haden leads the charge and contributes material, but the real star here may in fact be Carla Bley, who arranged numbers, wrote several, and contributed typically brilliant piano work. Also of particular note in a particularly talented crew is guitarist Sam Brown, the standout of "El Quinto Regimiento/Los Cuatro Generales/Viva la Quince Brigada," a 21-minute marathon. Reissue producer Michael Cuscuna has done his best with the mastering here, but listeners will note a roughness to the sound - one that is in keeping with the album's tone and attitude.
