Modern English are a new wave/post-punk band from Colchester, Essex, England best known for their songs "I Melt with You", "Hands Across the Sea", and "Ink and Paper". The group disbanded in 1987, only to reform two years later and then disband after another two years (1991). They reunited again in 1995 and have continued in various lineups since that time, with four fifths of the original lineup currently back in the band.

A soundtrack album is any album that incorporates music directly recorded from the soundtrack of a particular feature film or television show. The first such album to be commercially released was Walt Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the soundtrack to the film of the same name, in 1938. The first soundtrack album of a film's orchestral score was that for Alexander Korda's 1942 film Jungle Book, composed by Miklós Rózsa.

With Soundtrack, Modern English have repaved a few of those old roads while still moving forward, which is a feat not many veteran bands have been able to pull off. Roping in producer Hugh Jones was a brilliant move since he was the man responsible for their hit albums After the Snow (1982) and Ricochet Days (1984). Soundtrack is the sound of yesterday, today, and tomorrow. While not as tribal and dark as After the Snow, the band has managed to create an album that will satisfy longtime fans and even attract a new generation of listeners. From the album's opener, "It's OK" (which would have been a great follow-up to "I Melt with You") to the moody, Pink Floyd-ian closer "Fin," Soundtrack is an album that may not slap you across the face on first listen, but it will bury its hooks deep in the your brain by the third spin.

Modern English were formed in Colchester, Essex, England, in 1977 by Robbie Grey (Vocals), Gary McDowell (Guitar) and Michael Conroy (Bass). In 2001 they recorded a new album 'Soundtrack' with producer Hugh Jones but due to the collapse of the record company it was shelved. Finally in 2010 this album is being released by Darla with a US tour at the planning stage.
