It was the first album to feature Coltrane playing soprano saxophone. The record became a major commercial success. In 1998, the album received the Grammy Hall of Fame award. It attained gold record status in 2018, having sold 500,000 copies.
It is easy to understand the appeal that these sides continue to hold. The unforced, practically casual soloing styles of the assembled quartet - which includes Coltrane (soprano/tenor sax), McCoy Tyner (piano), Steve Davis (bass), and Elvin Jones (drums) - allow for tastefully executed passages à la the Miles Davis Quintet, a trait Coltrane no doubt honed during his tenure in that band.
This 1960 recording was a landmark album in John Coltrane's career, the first to introduce his quartet with pianist McCoy Tyner and drummer Elvin Jones and the first release on which he played soprano saxophone. It also provided him with a signature hit, as his new group conception came together wonderfully on the title track. Renews automatically. Sample this album Artist (Sample).
Several tracks became jazz standards that have been covered by a myriad of other musicians. This album contains the title track, which is a cover of the same name by Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein II from The Sound of Music Original Soundtrack. The album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998. It is the first album that features Coltrane playing soprano saxophone while also playing his signature tenor saxophone
John Coltrane has been called self-indulgent, all I can say is if he is Im glad. 4. But Not For Me. Saxophone opens this piece very neatly. I would agree that Giant Steps is more famous than this album, after that, this probably is the most well known of his, under his own name. I disagree that the improvisation brings "down points.
