Irish beat/rock groups in the late sixties and early 70's all faced the same dilemma: to be successful they had to leave Ireland. Even though the country could produce world class rock acts, almost all of them were forced to go to England to gain recognition there, before they would be accepted at home. It was a fickle time and allegiances were formed and disbanded on a regular basis. The first major breakthrough band in Ireland was "Them," featuring the the legendary Van Morrison. Formed in 1964, they were from Belfast which was official part of the UK and so they are often not thought of as an "Irish" band.

These groups eventually infused their original rock compositions with increasingly complex musical ideas and a distinctive sound. In mid-1962 the Rolling Stones started as one of a number of groups increasingly showing blues influence, along with bands like the Animals and the Yardbirds. British rock broke through to mainstream popularity in the United States in January 1964 with the success of the Beatles.

A hallmark of 90’s pop-rock, The Cranberries are one of the rare Irish bands to make an auspicious run on US music charts with singles like Zombie, Linger, and Ode to My Family. 5. My Bloody Valentine. One of the most well-rounded and respected Irish musicians who you’ve probably never heard of. Jimi Hendrix once proclaimed Gallagher as the best guitar player in the world, and similar to rock gods Led Zeppelin, sold millions of albums without releasing a single.

Picking up where volume one left off, this second volume covers the Rhythm & Blues Beat years, from 1964-1969. Compared with its predecessor, which focused exclusively on ska, this compilation at first glance seems positively schizophrenic. Careening from American R&B and soul headfirst into British beat and delving into Jamaican rocksteady and reggae, one is tempted to ask just what Island label head Chris Blackwell was thinking.

A comprehensive resource for the great rock groups and artists that have come out of Ireland. Includes an online radio station devoted to Irish Rock Music and a discussion group. The power trio Taste, led by Rory Gallagher, was one of Ireland's early successes internationally. Indie pop/rock band formed in Dublin in 2007. Instrumental trio from Kerry that move seamlessy between delicate intricate passages and heavy guitar riffs. Ten Speed Racer were a Dublin indie band consistings of the three Barrett brothers and two friends, active from 2000 to 2004.

Rock music has been a part of the music of Ireland since the 1960s, when the British Invasion brought British blues, psychedelic rock and other styles to the island.

Traditional Irish music remains very popular in Ireland today. Every night of the week across Ireland’s cities, towns and villages, pubs rock to the sounds of trad. The All Ireland Fleadh Cheoil is the biggest gathering of trad musicians in the world. The Fleadh will make history this year as it takes place in Derry~Londonderry city for the first time ever. Traditional Irish pubs are copied the world over, but you can never beat the genuine article. Our festivals all come with a healthy serving of trad music, from the Galway Arts Festival to the Westport Food Festival.
