Hoodoo Gurus (referred to as the Gurus by fans) are an Australian rock band formed in Sydney in 1981, by the mainstay Dave Faulkner (songwriter, lead singer and guitarist) and later joined by Richard Grossman (bass), Mark Kingsmill (drums), and Brad Shepherd (guitar, vocals, harmonica). Their popularity peaked in the mid to late 1980s with albums Mars Needs Guitars!, Blow Your Cool! and Magnum Cum Louder.
If there was ever any doubt that the Hoodoo Gurus were one of the best unknown rock acts of the 1980s and early '90s, then this compilation should clear that up. At a whopping 40 tracks - culled from every Gurus album and including all the hits - Ampology is an energetic, comprehensive portrait of this Australian pop/rock outfit. Though the Hoodoo Gurus certainly could rock - and they rocked hard, at that - they also had some excellently catchy pop songs, and that is what truly distinguished their career.
Ampology is a two disc compilation album by Australian rock group Hoodoo Gurus, spanning their entire career from their first single, "Leilani" (October 1982) through to "Real Deal" (1997). At the time of its release Hoodoo Gurus had been disbanded for two years. Lead vocalist, guitarist and chief songwriter Dave Faulkner discusses each track in his June 2000 article "Pop and punishment".

Following the release of Hoodoo Gurus’ third studio album Blow Your Cool in 1987, guitarist Bramley left the band, and was replaced by Divinyl Rick Grossman for 1989’s Magnum Cum Louder. The record spawned the radio singles Come Anytime, Another World, and Baby Can Dance, and paved the way for 1991’s full-length Kinky. Three years later the band issued their rockiest album to date Crank, followed by Blue Cave in 1996, after which Hoodoo Gurus disbanded.
