THE AUDITION Fred Meads, Director of Vocal Studies, will audition each boy during a 15 minute scheduled time slot. The boy will participate in four singing activities: vocalization, a melody/rhythm exercise, a harmony exercise, and singing a simple song. The audition is designed to demonstrate a boy’s ability and talent, not his prior training.

The school served boys in grades 4–8, many of whom came from across the United States and from many countries. It was one of only two boychoir boarding schools in the United States, the other being Saint Thomas Choir School in New York City. The New York Symphony Orchestra was founded as the New York Symphony Society in New York City by Leopold Damrosch in 1878. For many years it was a fierce rival to the older Philharmonic Symphony Society of New York (New York Philharmonic). It was supported by Andrew Carnegie who built Carnegie Hall (opened in 1891) expressly for the orchestra. The Symphony was known for performing more colorful French and Russian works than the Philharmonic, which excelled in German repertoire.

The American Boychoir is regarded as the United States' premier concert boys' choir.
