Bob Dylan Arrives? Too promotional ? Too avantgarde. Just about every song on Another Side merits detailed discussion, but I would rather compress things a little bit by simply saying that the album is also quite musically diverse for something recorded with such limited means.

This was indeed Another Side of Bob Dylan, complicated love songs and only one protest song – Chimes of Freedom. COF is filled symbolism & surrealism, not like his earlier topical songs. Despite the album’s thematic shift, Dylan performed the entirety of Another Side of Bob Dylan as he had previous records – solo.

It captures Dylan taking himself less seriously while slowly evolving into a mainstream star. The album veers from surreal comedic turns ( Motorpsycho Nitemare ) to romantic revelations ( All I Really Want to Do ) and personal manifestos ( It Ain’t Me Babe ). My Back Pages is a declaration of independence from political beliefs, while the spare and melodic Chimes of Freedom tells of self-liberation.
