The group was a successful recording combo in its own right, but most of the work by the musicians in the band during this period was as the core of the de facto house band at Stax Records. Members of Booker T. s (often, but not always, performing as a unit) performed as the studio backing band for Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Albert King, Johnnie Taylor, Eddie Floyd, the Staple Singers, Wilson Pickett, Delaney & Bonnie and many others in the 1960s.

The coolest soul backup band in the world, led by organist Booker T. Jones, grooves its way through 12 instrumental cuts, including "Sweet Potato," "Working in the Coal Mine," and "In the Midnight Hour.

"Please retry". was the first album the newly formed group released. Though not as focused as its predecessor Soul Dressing, and not as great as the following year's Hip Hug-Her, the album is very enjoyable and features many terrific moments. Only one track here was released as a single. The great "My Sweet Potato", a piano workout for Booker T. Jones with marvelous support from drummer Al Jackson, J. was a top twenty R&B hit.
