Though rooted in bop, Bunky Green embraces both pop and avant-garde idioms as well, channeling his myriad influences to create a soulful and lithe sound with an impressive command of space and time. Bassist Cleveland Eaton, pianist Willie Pickens, and drummer Harold Jones are all in fine form throughout, clearly relishing the indelible melodies of selections like "The Shadow of Your Smile" and "Yesterday.

Vernice "Bunky" Green (born April 23, 1935) is an American jazz alto saxophonist and educator. Green was raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he played the alto saxophone, mainly at a local club called "The Brass Rail". His first big break came when he was hired in New York City by Charles Mingus as a replacement for Jackie McLean in the 1960s. His brief stint with the eccentric bass player made a deep impression.

It combines "Playin' For Keeps," and "Testifyin' Time" originally issued on the famous Chess label. It was engineered by the great Ron Malo. Rudresh and Bunky recently made the Apex album together: Apex (Dig) Before the concert began Rudresh Mahanthappa paid hommage to Bunky Green, a major influence on Rudresh. Bunky was present on stage and humbly received praise from his fellow musician. So when I came across this record I bought it. It is a reissue of "Testifying time" and "Playing for keeps" on one handsome disc.
