Loretta Mary Aiken, known as Jackie Mabley, a Vaudeville singer and entertainer, and later as Moms Mabley, a standup comedienne was widely-known and celebrated within African American communities for six decades, before her first television appearance as Moms Mabley on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in 1968. Prior to beginning a career as an entertainer, Loretta Mary Aiken was born on March 19, 1894 in Brevard, NC, a southern city like many others during the era of Jim Crow and racial segregation.
