Dave Lemieux's 11th pick is a November 11, 1972 concert given at the Century II Convention Hall in Wichita, Kansas. Europe '72 hit record stores just a few days earlier but the Grateful Dead's lineup already had shifted: Pigpen retired from the stage after June 1972, leaving Keith Godchaux as the sole keyboardist. During the European tour, things were trending this way anyway - Pigpen retreated from the spotlight in 1970 and once Godchaux came aboard, the blues singer's presence became minimal.

Dave's Picks Volume 11: Century II Convention Hall, Wichita, KS 11/17/72. Fans received their first taste of this complimentary combo with the release of the four-disc Steppin' Out With The GRATEFUL DEAD: England '72 set. It contained material from their famous 1972 European tour recorded during various shows in England. Next was Dick's Picks Vol. 30 Academy of Music, New York City, NY, 3/25 and 3/28/72 culled from two other nights of the same stand found here.

Dave's Picks Volume 28 is a three-CD live album by the rock band the Grateful Dead.

Century II accepts the from Music Theatre Wichita and Theater League and will make a donation! We challenge Kay Blair at CityArts, Ripton Melhado at Hyatt Regency Wichita and Susie Santa at Go Wichita! . From the streets of New Jersey to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, this is the musical that’s just too good to be true. Featuring the legendary top ten hits: Sherry , Big Girls Don’t Cry , Walk Like A Man , Can’t Take My Eyes Off You , December, 1963 (Oh What A Night).

Century II also has a massive convention hall that is regularly filled with a variety of events including wedding, comic, wine, and outdoor conventions. I don't typically get anything but it's cool to have the option in such a classy setting. Waiting a will call was a little long for some but not for me! I got lucky in the back of the line when one of the attendants waved me over and gave me my tickets! I met my man and we headed into the concert hall. I had been to the ballet in Tulsa and noticed that the seating in Wichita was a little outdated. The carpet seats are somewhat worn and there was a weird odor around us!

Much of the Dead's early stuff is raw and powerful, but as their playing skills progressed through the mid to late 70s, their sound became too slick and over produced (not that some of the albums of that period are bad in any regard). By their the time they released those two terrible albums in the late 1980s, the original fire had long since disappeared and not much was left but a drug addicted empty husk of a band with legions of literally "DEAD" heads following them blindly around. Their sound had become very clichéd and watered down.

Talk about Grateful Dead - Century II Convention Hall, Wichita, KS • 11/17/72

Nahn
This is another fantastic late '72 show. The band were rocking from the beginning to the end. I just don't understand why the Dead sold this with the cover image black and white. oh well.
Carrot
Killer performances from start to finsh. Donna's wailing is kept to a minimum, and unfortunately no Pigpen.
