E2-E4, released in 1984, is a solo recording by German musician and Ash Ra Tempel founder Manuel Göttsching. The album consists of one minimalistic, hour-long electronic track that Göttsching recorded in one take using a sequencer, with improvised keyboards, metallic percussion, and guitar playing. The album is named after the most popular opening chess move 1. e2-e4 (which is expressed in long algebraic notation).

E2-E4 has an elusive appeal, one that is mysterious even to its maker. In 1981 and ’82, Göttsching was partway through planning a new solo album-it was quite complicated, with different sections and laborious themes. He wasn’t sure what to do with this new music, which came so easily. By 1981, Göttsching had made many pieces at home on his own for many purposes, but this one was lightning in a bottle.

Manuel Goettsching - E2-E4. Story behind the cult ambient album, the predecessor of Techno & House music. As it turned out later, Goettsching had spent several years getting ready to record his most important album in just one hour.

Manuel Göttsching: E2-E4 by AAJ Italy Staff, published on April 24, 2007.

Talk about Manuel Göttsching - E2-E4

Listening to it as a whole 58 minute track, it's totally clear this brilliant album makes no sense on vinyl whatsoever, I wouldn't pay 1 € for it, all vinyls of this are completely worthless :-) It's like it was made with CD in mind even thought there weren't any commercially available at the time, that's how ahead of its time it has been ;-)
