Icelandic composer Daníel Bjarnason has garnered widespread acclaim for his debut album, Processions. His versatility as an arranger and conductor has led to collaborations with with a broad array of musicians outside the classical field, including Sigur Rós & Efterklang.

Daníel Bjarnason’s debut album, Processions, came out in 2009 amidst global economic and political meltdown. It was physical and driven, often desperate and angry – the unforgettable climactic rhythm of the Red-Handed movement from Processions, for example, or the way the Bow to String concerto, with its images of blood and bone and breath, spoke of a painfully human struggle, multitracked cello forming a multitude of crying throats. The modern concerns of Over Light Earth are also contained in its modern recording techniques. The close-miking used on the orchestra make for an intimate sound not usually associated with ensembles this large. You can hear individual violins in the strings, like a personal testimony cutting through the abstraction of the 6 o’clock news.

On Over Light Earth the intensity of Bjarnason’s orchestral voice is captured through meticulous close-miking and multitracking, a recording process that sets this recording radically apart from that of conventional orchestral recordings. This album is very much the fruit of Bjarnason’s ongoing and intimate symbiosis with Bedroom Community’s Valgeir Sigurðsson. Here, with engineer Paul Evans and the newly formed Reykjavík Sinfonia, they have produced a suitably unconventional symphonic recording.
