Real Ragtime Recordings from Its Heyday. Audio CD, March 2, 2016. They were more likely to find banjos and brass bands playing ragtime than pianos, and their collections of disc recordings almost certainly had numerous examples of watered-down ragtime-the Tin Pan Alley knock-offs that really had no ragtime but called themselves rags just for the added marketability such a designation would bring. Ragtime was as much about a musical mood, a general feeling in the air, as it was about what scholars would identify as real ragtime. It was a trope that defined the early recording industry and pervaded the entire culture for a generation. These are the recordings people listened to, whether they were really.

Ragtime – also spelled rag-time or rag time – is a musical style that enjoyed its peak popularity between 1895 and 1919. Its cardinal trait is its syncopated or "ragged" rhythm. The style has its origins in African-American communities in cities such as St. Louis. Ben Harney, a Kentucky native, wrote "You've Been a Good Old Wagon But You Done Broke Down" and helped popularize the style. The composition was published in 1896, a few months after Ernest Hogan's "La Pas Ma La".

Contemporary Ragtime Guitar, originally released in the early 1970s, was the first record put out on Kicking Mule records by acoustic guitar practitioner Stefan Grossman, who found a large underground movement dedicated to ragtime guitar. This record compiles contributions from a handful of guitarists who have mastered the intricacies of syncopation and counterpoint that ragtime features  . Complete Ragtime Guitar is one of the most hallowed artifacts of the finger-style guitar heyday.
