Ragtime Piano Roll, Vol. 2 is one of those 10" LPs that made musical life really interesting - not to mention the listening tantalizing - once the LP got moving into record stores and people's hands. The eight tracks here were all derived from piano rolls, by such luminaries as Scott Joplin, James Scott (aka "Little Professor") and more. The idea is a great one, the quality is excellent, and the annotation superb.

This discography of the Riverside label includes the two principal 12" LP series. The main label's mono series had a 12- (later RLP 12-) prefix and the RLP 1100 series consisted of stereo issues (not given here) of albums also released in mono. The Jazzland subsidiary is also listed, but the earlier 10" series are omitted. They principally were the 1000 series of reissues of early jazz, and the 2500 series of new recordings unrestricted to a single style.

4. St. Louis Rag. Tom Turpin.

For aspiring young piano players interested in ragtime piano music, here are five iconic pieces to learn today that are a wonderful introduction to the genre. 1. Maple Leaf Rag by Scott Joplin. We are lucky this even exists. It is from a pianola roll played by Scott Joplin himself, found by chance years ago in the wrong box! With this song everyone stopped what they were doing and a craze for the piano style was born. The emotional impact is unstoppable, and was strong enough that leisure time activities after that often included ragtime piano.
