Joshua Rifkin has been closely associated with the music of Scott Joplin ever since his release of three LPs on Nonesuch in the early '70s, though later that decade he also recorded a selection of the best-known rags for EMI. The later recordings appear on this compilation, and the grace and intelligence Rifkin brought to his earlier interpretations hold him in good stead here. While these are still in the same vein as Hamlisch's work, one wishes the beautiful waltz Bethena had been spared the palm court treatment and presented instead in its solo piano version.
