Twoism is the first EP released by Boards of Canada, on their own Music70 record label in 1995. It was a self-financed cassette and record distributed privately. Major public releases would not happen until 1996's Hi Scores EP on Skam Records. This EP was, however, the work which got them noticed by Skam Records. In 2002, this EP was reissued on vinyl and CD by Warp Records.

I would say that it does not contain the most imaginative work that BOC has ever done, that would be contained in their albums The Campfire Headphase, Geogaddi, Music has a Right to Children, and also their newest album, Tomorrow's Harvest.

The Boards' cassette-only sonic limitations are the most telltale sign of the times that produced Twoism. While "Directine" showcases the particular sense of disembodiment the duo induces, with synths floating and kicks to give it that sense of propulsion, the individual, isolated hits are distorted and fuzzy, muddying the overall effect. The formulaic gurgling on "Iced Cooly" is largely forgettable, evoking Gerber's mashed peas more than the childlike phantoms that arise elsewhere in their discography. For those that contend the latter didn't travel far beyond the elysian fields of their major label emergence, Twoism will spur further critique, as in a sense, these thirty-six minutes show that the duo has basically been stuck in neutral since 1995.

Album · 1995 · 8 Songs. More By Boards of Canada. See All. Music Has the Right to Children.

The album took listeners to Boards of Canada's interesting mindscape, taking one to the kind of world that had a lot to say yet left much more to be explored by its visitors. Afterwards they released 2 other records, Geogaddi and The Campfire Headphase, the two of which cemented a holy trinity of Boards' most beloved albums. Where Music Has the Right to Children was wistful and breezy, and Geogaddi was murky and hostile, Twoism feels like a little bit of both. The title track is a perfect example and representation of this album, as it feels very gentle and calm but also quite melancholic and scary.
