Remedies is the third album released by New Orleans R&B artist Dr. John. The photography was by Steve LaVere, taken in 1969 at the Whisky a Go Go. In his interview with Uncut magazine (October 2010), Dr. John explained the "bad trip" environment which led to the epic closing track "Angola Anthem": "My managers put me in a psych ward. These guys were very bad people – I had gotten busted on a deal, and they got me bonded out of jail, and so when they did I could have got a parole violation.

John began recording his final album in 2017, first at Theriot’s home, then at Esplanade Studios. In early 2018, his health declined, and at a second session at Esplanade, he struggled to play the piano. The resulting album is anchored largely in traditional country music. These were people he grew up on, a lot of people didn’t know that, says Theriot. Dr. John had idolized Hank Williams Sr. since he was a teenager, and according to jazz vets like John Scofield, he had been talking about recording a country-tinged piano record a la Ray Charles’ Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music since at least the Eighties.
Malcolm John Rebennack (born November 20, 1941, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA – died June 6, 2019), better known by his stage name Dr. John, was an American singer and songwriter. His music combines blues, pop, jazz, boogie woogie and rock and roll. Rebennack began playing the piano at the age of six and, as he grew up, he became strongly influenced by the style of Roy Byrd (aka Professor Longhair).
John (born Malcolm John Rebennack on 20 November 1941; died 6 June 2019) was an American singer-songwriter, pianist and guitarist whose music combined blues, boogie woogie and rock and roll. The winner of six Grammy awards, Rebennack was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by singer John Legend on Monday, March 14, 2011. He was variously known as Mac Rebennack, Dr. John Creaux, Dr. John, the Night Tripper.
John completed work on a final album before his death, aware that it would be his last work, colleagues reported. John – whose real name was Mac Rebennack – began work in 2017 before his health began to fail, and had time to finish the project before he succumbed to a fatal heart attack on June 6 at age 77. By that time he was struggling to walk and found it difficult to leave his home. Towards the beginning, I don’t think Mac realized it would probably be his last record, but towards the end, I think he knew, guitarist and producer Shane Theriot told Rolling Stone.

The pianist, singer and songwriter Mac Rebennack, known better as Dr John, faces your questions in the latest Uncut (dated July 2012), out now – but back in October 2010 (Take 161), he took us on a fascinating journey through his most important, and interesting, releases, from Gris-Gris to Exile On Main St. We went to a nudist camp. Somewhere, we made up a song called ‘The Symphony Of Frogs’. The early outing LEONARD JAMES AND HIS ORCHESTRA Boppin’ And A-Strollin’ (Decca, 1958) A full decade before Mac Rebennack began trading as Dr John, his recording career begins.
