Metamorphosis is the third compilation album of The Rolling Stones music released by former manager Allen Klein's ABKCO Records (who usurped control of the band's Decca/London material in 1970) after the band's departure from Decca and Klein. Released in 1975, Metamorphosis centres on outtakes and alternate versions of well-known songs recorded from 1964 to 1970.

Metamorphosis is both interesting and embarrassing, a curio and an outrage. Its 14 tracks consist of jams, outtakes, alternate takes and primitive versions of songs the Rolling Stones later revised into more polished numbers, all recorded (roughly) during their first six years. But one can’t really call it a Rolling Stones album.

On most of these tracks the only Rolling Stones member that appears is Mick Jagger. While "Out Of Time" and "Heart Of Stone" were already well-known, they appear here in drastically different renditions, alongside several other obscure recordings created up until the Sticky Fingers sessions of 1970. Released in June 1975, Metamorphosis came out the same day as the band's authorized hits collection Made in the Shade and was also seen to be cashing in on The Rolling Stones' summer Tour of the Americas. The album's cover art alludes to Franz Kafka's novel: The Metamorphosis.

Talk about The Rolling Stones - Metamorphosis

The mid-'60s demos are unremarkable (with the exception of the Richards/Oldham composition 'I'd Much Rather Be With the Boys', a nifty little song even if it wasn't right for the Stones), but I'm giving "Metamorphosis" three and a half stars for the sweeping orchestral version of 'Out of Time' (far superior to the version on "Aftermath", in my humble opinion), Bill Wyman's mock-woeful 'Downtown Suzie' (one of only two Stones songs written by Wyman to be given an official release), and 'I'm Going Down'. The latter sounds like a finished track except for Jagger's tentative vocal, and the sax (Bobby Keys) and percussion (Rocky Dijon) are especially nice touches.
