Magdalen College (/ˈmɔːdlɪn/ MAWD-lin) is one of the wealthiest constituent colleges of the University of Oxford, with a financial endowment of £273. 2 million as of 2018. Magdalen stands next to the River Cherwell and has within its grounds a deer park and Addison's Walk. The large, square Magdalen Tower is an Oxford landmark, and it is a tradition, dating to the days of Henry VII, that the college choir sings from the top of it at 6 .

The choirmaster – or informator choristarum – was Bernard Rose, and David encountered music by Rose’s predecessor of more than four centuries earlier, John Sheppard. He began to introduce this then little-known repertory to a public audience – probably for the first time since the 16th century – in concerts in the chapel. Born David Wulstan Bevan Jones in Birmingham, he was the son of the Rev Norman Jones and his wife, Margaret, but made his own selection of names. In 2006 he was elected an honorary fellow of St Peter’s College, Oxford, to which he donated his library, and for whose choir he produced The St Peter’s Chant Book (2013). In latter years his interests focused on philology, medieval lyrics and biblical studies.

The choir marked the start of Trinity term yesterday with a very moving memorial service for Edmund Bridges (Academical Clerk 2010-2015). We have our first Sunday evensong of term this evening at 6pm, with music by Howells, Bairstow, Wood, and Radcliffe. The music list for the upcoming term. The Choir of Magdalen College, Oxford. Thank you so much to St. Michael's, Jonathan Ryan, the Shepherd of the Hills Church and all our hosts for a brilliant trip! See all. Photos. Anthems & Canticles by Tomkins.
