Stanford's Original A Cappella Group. The Mendicants are a group of singers devoted to performing the best songs of today, yesterday and several decades ago. We pride ourselves on our wide range of styles, from gospel and barbershop to original compositions, jazz standards and contemporary pop. You can see us on stage, serenading in stairwells, or even just breaking out into song around campus. Legend has it that the Mendicants were founded in 1963 by a transfer student from Yale by the name of Hank Adams. Actually that part’s not really legend. He definitely transferred here and he definitely started the group with 5 other guys. What happened next, however, has been obscured by the mists of time. They say that the group originally rehearsed only one song that they performed for the first time one lunchtime in Branner Hall, then all-female housing. The Mendicants performing at the 2011 State of the Valley Conference in San Jose. Background information. The Stanford Mendicants was founded in 1963 by Hank Adams, a transfer student from Yale University, with a group of 5 undergraduate men. The group originally rehearsed only a single song before breaking into the dining commons of Branner Hall, an all-women's dormitory at the time, and performing their song during lunch. Adams often recalled, himself tearing up, that during their performance, the women wept, and there was literally "not a dry eye in the house". Having only rehearsed the one song, they quickly fled through an open window and went immediately back to rehearsal. Just Like That (1991). Feline Casanova (1992). Back For Seconds (1994).
