Fred Hersch's 2009 recording, Whirl (Palmetto Records), was where pure magic first occurred in the pianist's extensive and consistently superb discography. That particular outing introduced his now long-standing trio with bassist John Hebert and drummer Eric McPherson. Alive At the Vanguard (2012), Floating (2014), and Sunday Night At The Vanguard (2016) by the group followed, all on Palmetto Records. Spinning through Hersch's previous outings with this nine years and running trio says that they bring the "A" game every time. On Live In Europe it's an "A+" game. The players are as flexibly synchronized and adept at presenting their three-way improvisational and emotional expressionism as they could be, on a set that begins with a jittery take on Thelonious Monk's "We Se.

Live in Europe’ finds the trio in near telepathic communion. While each band member is a virtuoso player, individual bravura is always subordinate to group interplay. Lyricism, open-eared interaction and a respect for the power of space are all invaluable components of the trio's identity. His new disc, Live in Europe, may be his best trio album to date ещё.

Live in Europe" (10 tracks; 64 mi. was recorded at the tail end of the trio's European tour in November, 2017. The album opens and closes with a Thelonius Monk cover: "We See" kicks things off; "Blue Moon" is a solo encore to close things out. Right after "We See" we get into the new Fred Hersch-penned tunes. Snape Maltings" is named after a small English town Hersch drove through many years ago, as he explains in the (excellent) liner notes. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that Fred Hersch hails from Cincinnati (where I live), although of course he's lived for decades in New York now. But about 10 years ago, Hersch started coming back here on a regular basis (typically yearly) and I've had the great fortune of seeing him here live, both solo and with the trio, a number of times. If you have chance to see Hersch in concert, do not miss him!

Together, they have been lauded by The New York Times as one of the major ensembles our time for their 2016 Grammy-nominated album, Sunday Night at The Vanguard.

AIFF 4. kHz 24-bit. This new album signals a high level mark for an ensemble that has been garnering critical and popular praise for nearly a decade. This is the best trio recording we've yet made, and pretty much as well as I can play in terms of energy and technical command.
