In early 91 darkthrone decided to leave death metal, they had followed death metal since the beginning and didn't like the way the genre was heading. all those 80s years had left them pursuing a varied diet but now leaned more on 70-75 sabbath, 79-85 motorhead, bathory and hellhammer celtic frost than ever and it was time to leave. And so it came to pass that when Peaceville took delivery of the masters for Darkthrone's sophomore album, A Blaze in the Northern Sky, in 1992, legend has it that they thought this was a joke; such was the inexplicably crude violence perpetrated by its sometimes epic-length black metal odes to all things wicked and obscure.

Darkthrone is a black metal band from Kolbotn, Norway. It formed in 1986 as a death metal band under the name Black Death. In 1991, the band embraced a black metal style influenced by Bathory and Celtic Frost and became one of the leading bands in the Norwegian black metal scene.

Yet Darkthrone have somehow bucked this prophecy with a career that, against all odds, now spans a quarter century and a whopping sixteen studio albums – only Enslaved, at thirteen during a comparable timespan, even come close. And for much of that time, Darkthrone has consisted of just two, versatile musicians and songwriters in Ted ‘Nocturno Culto ‘ Skjellum (vocals/guitars/bass) and Gylve ‘Fenriz’ Nagell (drums/vocals) – except for their formative years in which, along with guitarist Zephyrous and bassist Dag Nielsen, they unleashed a death metal debut in 1991’s Soulside Journey.

First ever Darkthrone album I ever heard when I first started getting into Black Metal and still the best of their discography today! Amazing album and I must say better than Transilvanian Hunger. In my opinion in some cases this even outstans Transylvanian Hunger. 3 Under a Funeral Moon. Ugly album - a reason why I love this. This one is better than Panzerfaust in my opinion. This isn't only their best album, but the best Norwegian Black Metal record ever.

Darkthrone started as a death metal band, but by the end of 1990 and the beginning of 1991, when they were rehearsing the material that would eventually become Goatlord, Nocturno Culto, Zephyrous, and Fenriz developed interest to black metal. Soon they decided to abort the Goatlord sessions because the material didn't reflect what they felt, and started to compose the songs that were to be found.
