Under a Funeral Moon is the third studio album by Norwegian black metal band Darkthrone. It was recorded in June 1992 and released 24 June 1993 by Peaceville Records. Under a Funeral Moon was the last album on which guitarist Zephyrous (Ivar Enger) performed; he left the band shortly after its release.

Under a Funeral Moon creates an album of such unrelenting darkness and nihilism that all other black metal albums seem light in comparison. Atmosphere will always be the key to success for a black metal band and Under a Funeral Moon delivers it in spades. How does one go about creating atmosphere? This has always wondered me and I have spent many an hour debating this. It comes clear that right from the start, with the introductory track Natassja in Eternal Sleep what Darkthrone aim to do. With jagged riffs lurching in strange patterns and vocals that sound like Nocturno Culto has risen from the grave, the sense of coldness embodies in the first track serves to foreshadow the dark and misanthropic journey the listener is about to depart on. There’s a very good sense of flow throughout this album, each track serves as a natural evolution of the ideas laid down by the former.

Under a Funeral Moon is the third album by the Norwegian black metal band, Darkthrone. It was released in July 1993, and marked Darkthrone's complete musical conversion to the black metal style. This album also contained the band’s first Norwegian song. Darkthrone's previous album, A Blaze in the Northern Sky, retained some death metal traits. However, in an interview, Fenriz claimed that they began recording Under a Funeral Moon with the intention of creating a "pure black metal album

Darkthrone provided a shock for their fans back in 1991 with the release of A Blaze in the Northern Sky, it was raw, badly produced and simplistic; unlike their previous release, Soulside Journey which was more technical death metal. However, Darkthrone themselves admitted that A Blaze in the Northern Sky wasn't the black metal that they wanted to play; as they had to rush it there was still some 'death metal riffs' that Fenriz tried his hardest to subdue with his drumming.
