Complete your Ozric Tentacles collection. The Hidden Step was to be the last full-length album featuring the explosive Rad on drums and, in some ways, the end of an era. The line-up that had started with 95’s Become the Other and had given us such amazing albums as Curious Corn and Waterfall Cities would only produce the four live tracks on the Pyramidion EP after this release. Thankfully, Rad went with a, erm, bang, as this is one of their strongest albums. Holohedron, which opens the album, is a space rock/techno combo and still sounds modern to my ears. Not too many sections on this one, but still progressive in attitude.

Essentially, The Hidden Step falls into the space rock/progressive rock category. But Ozric was never a carbon copy of Pink Floyd, King Crimson, ELP, or Yes any more than it was a copy of Tangerine Dream.

This album is another strong album by the Ozrics. I own and can recommend what I believe to be their best albums, Curious Corn, Jurassic Shift, Strangeitude, Erpland, Pungent Effulgent, Spirals In Hyperspace, Waterfall Cities, The Floor's Too Far Away, The Yum Yum Tree, and The Hidden Step. The only album of theirs that I own that I would not recommend with as much enthusiasm is The Floating Seeds Remixed album. I could lose that one and not shed a tear. But the others are consistently great in my opinion

Ozric Tentacles isn't an easy band to pigeonhole. Another thing The Hidden Step readily acknowledges is world music; elements of Middle Eastern, Arabic, and North African music are quite prominent on this release. If The Hidden Step was played alongside Algerian rai or contemporary Turkish pop, it would be apparent how the East and West are benefiting one another. While a lot of contemporary Middle Eastern and North African pop has been heavily influenced by western pop and rock, The Hidden Step is an example of a British rock band looking east for some of its musical inspiration
