Closer in tone to 2004’s Brother Is to Son but with Ships' loftier (but still .

In the end, it's the restraint, control, and unlikely expansiveness that make The Best of Gloucester County a strong and surreal step forward for Smith and his band. 79. As wild as a Danielson record can get, his compositions are always meticulously recorded and arranged, and his work ethic is palpable on every track-it's not that these songs feel over-labored, exactly (although they certainly don't seem spontaneous), it's that it's easy to hear all the ways in which Smith is consumed by.

Best of Gloucester County. Studio album by. Danielson. multi-album Cassette Box Sets from Dinosaur J. of Montreal, and Joan Of Ar. n 2012 Joyful Noise released their first album to chart on Billboard: Kishi Bashi "151a" (debuting at on the "Heatseekers" chart). Since that time, new music on Joyful Noise from artists such as Sebadoh, Dumb Numbers, David Yow, and Son Lux have all charted. Ships is the seventh full-length album by New Jersey indie rock band Danielson. The album was a massive collaboration among Daniel Smith and various other musicians.

Nonetheless, "Best of Gloucester County" is a perfectly enjoyable and pleasant album. The only problem is that it's just that. The moments of spiritual brevity are sort of ephemeral, resulting in an album that sounds important, but isn't necessarily so. It's akin to one rolling and amassing suite that never truly finds itself delivering infatuating melodies or emotional catharsis  . While always too playful to be preachy, Danielson seems to be unable to mature into something more interesting, at least on this record. Delirious troubadour, surreal evangelist, Ed Wood of Christian persuasion; call Smith whatever you wish.

New album The Best of Gloucester County (named for Smith’s home county) was create. ver the course of five years and advances the force and clarity of Ships (2006) - an album brought to life by more than two dozen musical collaborators. Fewer musicians contribute this time around, but the new (still rather large) group assembled for Best of Gloucester County effectively steps into the Danielson mode. Nine members make up the core lineup, and when joined by a horn section and other special guests, the effect is something like an enthusiastic family jam.
