Black Sabbath - Master Of Reality (1971).

Master of Reality is the third studio album by English rock band Black Sabbath, released on 21 July 1971. It is widely regarded as the foundation of doom metal, stoner rock, and sludge metal. It was certified double platinum after having sold over 2 million copies. Master of Reality was Black Sabbath's first and only top 10 album in the US until 13, forty-two years later.

Master of Reality was the first album Black Sabbath spent more than a week recording. The band’s debut was recorded in a single 12-hour day. The follow-up, Paranoid, took less six days. For Master of Reality, the band had a luxurious three months. It was Black Sabbath’s last album to debut in the Top 10 until their reunion album 13, which debuted at No. 1 in 2013. In July 2001, Master of Reality was certified double platinum. Although nobody complained about the length of the album, by today’s standards Master of Reality’s 32-minute running length would be considered a bit concise, especially since two of the songs are instrumentals that clock in at two minutes combined and there were only eight songs on the original pressing.

However, the ones from Master of Reality were used less often than any of the others. They are The Elegy (with After Forever), Deathmask (with Into the Void), and The Haunting (with Children of the Grave). The original Warner Brothers prints of the album had some strangeness with Deathmask and being an individually labeled track. Depending on which version you got, Deathmask had a running time as high as 3:08, which is arbitrary, as it falls in the middle of vocals in the song  . This is the first Black Sabbath album I ever bought on vinyl. I previously had a cassette of We Sold Our Soul For Rock N Roll, which made me want to hear everything they ever did. I remember seeing the album cover for the first time and just being completely fascinated. This was in August of ’81, I was 13 years old.

Oh, and Black Sabbath came up with Master Of Reality. Birmingham doomsters Black Sabbath started life as Earth in 1968, before changing their name a year later, inspired by an Italian horror movie of the same name. In 1970, they’d recorded and released their first two albums, Black Sabbath and Paranoid. In the process, not only had they become a commercial force, but effectively invented heavy metal as we know it. Black Sabbath were very different to anything around at the time, insists drummer Bill Ward. Master Of Reality was released in July 1971, and immediately became a major success. In the US, not only did the record make it to number eight on the charts, selling half-a-million copies in advance (the album has now sold over two million), but in the UK it reached number five. By comparison, the Paranoid album reached number 12 in the States and number four over here.

Black Sabbath's 'Master of Reality' Album Released 1971. Master of Reality was recorded at Island Studios, in London, during February and April 1971. The album was produced by Rodger Bain, who had also produced Black Sabbath's previous two albums. this is where my metal started. Amazing job black sabbath greetings from Quito-Ecuador.

The shortest album of Black Sabbath's glory years, Master of Reality is also their most sonically influential work. Here Tony Iommi began to experiment with tuning his guitar down three half-steps to C producing a sound that was darker, deeper, and sludgier than anything they'd yet committed to record. This trick was still being copied 25 years later by every metal band looking to push the limits of heaviness, from trendy nu-metallers to Swedish deathsters.
