Paranoid is the second studio album by the English rock band Black Sabbath. Released in September 1970, it was the band's only LP to top the UK Albums Chart until the release of 13 in 2013. Paranoid contains several of the band's signature songs, including "Iron Man", "War Pigs" and the title track, which was the band's only Top 20 hit, reaching number 4 in the UK charts. It is often cited as an influential album in the development of heavy metal music.

Paranoid is the second studio album by the English rock band Black Sabbath released on September 18th 1970 in the UK and on January 7th 1971 in the US, it was the band's only LP to top the UK Albums Chart until the release of 13 in 2013.

Six months after releasing Black Sabbath, they issued the song as Black Sabbath’s second single and demanded that the album’s title be changed from War Pigs to Paranoid. They wanted to remind potential customers of the song they’d seen four long-haired weirdos headbang to on Top of the Pops while avoiding the nasty business of saying something controversial in an era already fraught with civil unrest. But in the sprint to get the record into stores, Vertigo never bothered to commission an image that fit the new name. Propelled by its lead single, Paranoid was the only Black Sabbath album to top the British charts for the next four decades. where it nearly broke into the Top 10 mere months after the band’s small stateside debut, it has gone platinum four times.

Most of Black Sabbath's second album was written around the time of their first album. They recorded the whole "Paranoid" album in about two or three days, live in the studio. Though the band members were sent back to the studio to record one more song because the record company deemed the album was too short. Guitarist Tony Iommi recalled, "I sat there during the lunch break and came up with the main riff for 'Paranoid. Official music video. Black Sabbath performed "Paranoid" for German music program Beat Club (episode. It was shot shortly after the release of the album. The band performed the song on this TV soundstage with loaned equipment, leaving many viewers to believe that the band used Orange amps. This version is usually recognized as the official video for the song. Black Sabbath also filmed a music video for "Paranoid" in Belgium in 1970.

Black Sabbath’s second album topped the UK Charts, containing the hit songs Paranoid, War Pigs and Iron Man. It is considered a classic and is one of the most influential albums in heavy metal history. The album is widely considered the best metal album of all time, but the whole record features songs classified in many genres, like Planet Caravan, a psychedelic rock classic.

Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler, who wrote the lyric, explained the song's meaning to Mojo magazine June 2013: "Basically, it's just about depression, because I didn't really know the difference between depression and paranoia. It's a drug thing; when you're smoking a joint you get totally paranoid about people, you can't relate to people. There's that crossover between the paranoia you get when you're smoking dope and the depression afterwards. Paranoid" was much more successful. It was released six months after their self-titled first album and had a huge impact in their native UK, going to and becoming one of their signature songs. The group never charted again in the UK Top 10, but that wasn't a problem since album and ticket sales more than made up for it. Many UK rock bands, including Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, put little emphasis on singles.

The song Paranoid was the last one written for the album, and was intended as a filler song. Only took about 25 minutes to write the whole thing. The album’s first recording session was June 1970. Paranoid was the first Black Sabbath album I bought on January 1, 1995 along with Metallica’s Black Album. I heard Headless Cross first which was given to my brother from a friend in 1993 then Live At Last in early 1994 then I got We Sold Our Souls For Rock and Roll as a Christmas present later in 1994. I couldn’t get into Planet Caravan at first because I thought it was too strange but I later got into it in time. I also loved Hand of Doom and Rat Salad.
