Redirected from Foo Fighters seventh studio album). Wasting Light is the seventh studio album by American rock band Foo Fighters. It was released on April 12, 2011 on RCA Records, and is the first album to feature rhythm guitarist Pat Smear since The Colour and the Shape (1997). Wanting to capture the essence of their earlier work and avoid the artificiality of digital recording, the Foo Fighters recorded in the garage of frontman Dave Grohl in Encino, California, using only analog equipment

Wasting Light is the Foo Fighters' seventh album, released in 2011. While on tour with Them Crooked Vultures, Dave Grohl thought of the master plan for when FF returned: doing it in his garage (where he used to do demos), with no electronic equipment, under the production of Butch Vig (his first full album with Grohl since Nirvana’s Nevermind) and with its production accompanied by a career-spanning documentary on the. band. Tour guitarist Pat Smear was also back as an official member 12 years after his departure.

Wasting Light is an album very much steeped in alt-punk history. Vig produced a few bonus tracks on the Foo Fighters’ 2009 Greatest Hits album, but Wasting Light is the first full-on studio album that he and Grohl have worked on together since Nevermind some 20 years prior  . GUITAR WORLD: The new album has been heralded as the Foo Fighters’ return to rocking out. Was that anything like the intent? DAVE GROHL: I think so.

The back-to-basics album Wasting Light reunites Dave Grohl with producer Butch Vig and former Nirvana mates Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear. Grohl had already spent some time in a Seattle studio recording a humble demo tape that would become Foo Fighters' debut, one for whose release rights major labels were already grappling. But the sizable shadow cast by Cobain and the weight of his legacy and death was immense. This week, coupled with Wasting Light, their seventh full-length, Foo Fighters have been screening their new, somewhat revisionist, sometimes 3-D retrospective documentary, Back and Forth

Video: Foo Fighters Hang with Rolling Stone, Talk Wasting Light at SXSW. But this album is a special case on two counts. The first: Eleven tracks of fuzz-box brawn, mosh-pit-hurrah choruses and iron-horse momentum, Wasting Light is the best Foos album since the first two, Grohl’s all-solo 1995 debut, Foo Fighters, and the first full-band blast, 1997’s The Colour and the Shape. Wasting Light is also overdue confrontation: Grohl explicitly returning to a broken and still-painful past, for both inspiration and closure.

Foo Fighters is an American rock band, formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1994. It was founded by Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl as a one-man project following the dissolution of Nirvana after the suicide of Kurt Cobain. The group got its name from the UFOs and various aerial phenomena that were reported by Allied aircraft pilots in World War II, which were known collectively as "foo fighters".

Wasting Light does not mince words - it's punchy, crisp, and feels like an amalgamation of everything they've done in the past. It features rockers, ballads, and even the grunge-metal of their self-titled debut, all packed onto one disc. You could consider it a primer for all things Foo, and in an odd way it even makes a better "greatest hits" than their actual Greatest Hits. The album's strongest quality is that familiarity - the Foo Fighters always sound like themselves, and they'll never throw you for a loop
