Sunflower is the 16th studio album by American rock band the Beach Boys, released in August 1970, and their first on Reprise Records. record charts during a four-week stay, and becoming the lowest-charting Beach Boys album to that point. In the UK, the album performed better, peaking at number 29.

After Reprise rejected what was to be their debut album for the label, the Beach Boys re-entered the studio to begin work on what would become a largely different set of songs. The results signaled a creative rebirth for the band, a return to the beautiful harmonies and orchestral productions of their classic mid-'60s material. Though the songwriting didn't quite reach the high quality of "California Girls" or "God Only Knows," Sunflower showed the Beach Boys truly working as a band, and doing so better than they ever had in the past (or would in the future).

Perhaps the album's greatest revelation is the brief flowering of Dennis Wilson as a writing and singing talent, especially on the lovely "Forever. These two albums are very different from the earliest albums by the Beach Boys in the sense that they are more modern, but faint echoes of their early music and the artistry of Pet Sounds carry through in unique, innovative ways. I strongly recommend getting these albums if they are missing from your Beach Boys collection.

Sunflower, like most of The Beach Boys’ efforts following the failure of Smile, has been greatly underrated due in part to the common misconception that Pet Sounds is the only Beach Boys record worth seeking out. While a great deal of these latter-day efforts contrast greatly in quality from each other, there’s a solid amount that are worth the trouble of listening to. And I can absolutely guarantee you, Sunflower is essential, showing off a band in their prime while simultaneously giving one a glimpse of the potential that they had in 1970. it did but it was pretty bad grammatically. i plan on covering a few more (and summer in paradise). psandy March 6th 2017.
