Roswell Rudd (1965)Roswell Rudd1965. Numatik Swing Band (1973)Numatik Swing Band1973  . Since the time of the album's initial release it has been re-issued once in the United States: on the 1998 compilation CD Mixed, joined with October 1961 performances by the Cecil Taylor Unit (originally released as part of Gil Evans' album Into the Hot). The album had only previously been issued on CD (catalog MVCI-23046) with its original title and artist name, in 1991 by MCA Victor, Japan.

Legendary trombonist Roswell Rudd has put together a recording of pieces that have this effect on him. The musical pieces chosen have become standards of American song, most of the selections stemming from Rudd’s recollections of childhood when he would sing the songs in school or in church. The album begins with Stan Jones’s Ghost Riders In the Sky, a spirited, soulful take on the cowboy classic. John Lennon and Paul McCartney’s Here, There & Everywhere features the wonderfully idiosyncratic vocals of Bob Dorough over Medeski’s lush organ. A performer of eclectic taste and stylistic breadth, Roswell Rudd has provided an intriguing recording of music that has made an impact on him. Trombone for Lovers is a tribute to a lifetime of listening and love of music through the collaboration of an eclectic crew of musical friends.

Roswell Rudd (Roswell Hopkins Rudd, J. Sharon, Connecticut, November 17, 1935 - December 21, 2017) was an American jazz trombonist and composer. Although skilled in a variety of genres of jazz (including Dixieland, which he performed while in college) and other genres of music, he was known primarily for his work in free and avant-garde jazz. Since 1962 Rudd had worked extensively with saxophonist Archie Shepp. Rudd was born in Sharon, Connecticut.

Trombonist Roswell Rudd made his debut as leader with this eponymous 1965 date recorded in the Netherlands for the European-based America label. Fans of Rudd will immediately recognize his peculiar slide-heavy and note-bending style. While the album is primarily a free jazz effort, tracks such as "Old Stuff" and "Respects" do belie a quasi-boppish influence not dissimilar to the work of avant-garde icon saxophonist Ornette Coleman. Rudd is joined here by alto saxophonist John Tchicai, bassist Finn Von Eyben, and drummer Louis Moholo.
