Ravel: Bolero; La Valse; Rapsodie Espagnole. La Valse is played so full of emotion that I wonder how Munch didn't had a heart attack while conducting. Admirable, but, under the impulse of emotions one can't stop and think. Considering that Ravel attempt to evocate the old "Vienna", the tempo here is very rushed and a "breathtaking" interpretation such as this could not be the most adecuate for a work inspired on the viennese val room (I imagine dancers loosing the breath). Listen to Karajan with the Orchestre de Paris. Otherwise, Munch plays the original Suite From Mother Goose, while Monteux and Martinon provide us with Ravel's later, sequence altered and more complete ballet version. Each conducts a different orchestra. Monteux has the London Symphony, Munch the Boston Symphony and Martinon the Orchestra de Paris.

Ravel described the piece as "an evocation of a pavane that a little princess might, in former times, have danced at the Spanish court"  . After a performance by Charles Oulmont, Ravel mentioned to him that the piece was called "Pavane for a dead princess", not "dead pavane for a princess". When asked by the composer-conductor Manoah Leide-Tedesco how he arrived at the title Pavane pour une infante défunte, Ravel smiled coyly and replied, "Do not be surprised, that title has nothing to do with. I simply liked the sound of those words and I put them there, c'est tout".
