The Low Anthem is a band from Providence, Rhode Island formed in 2006 by friends on the baseball diamond, Ben Knox Miller and Jeff Prystowsky. The current lineup consists of Ben Knox Miller (vocals, guitars, trumpets, saws), Jeff Prystowsky (vocals, drums, double basses, synths), Bryan Minto (vocals, guitars, harmonicas) and Florence Grace Wallis (violins, vocals).

After the success of the Low Anthem’s previous album, Oh My God, Charlie Darwin, which brought them critical acclaim and a new audience, we might have expected the Rhode Island band to produce something buoyant, something full of hope and high spirits. But no. Here is an album obsessed with death. We’re all going to die, the band appear to be telling us, and to illustrate their point, they allow virtually every note they play to die slowly in front of our ears.

Smart Flesh begins with a cover of George Carter standard "Ghost Woman Blues"- a pretty display of their harmonic compatibility that establishes the LP's thematic thread of being supernaturally inhabited. The cavernous, almost living sound of Smart Flesh gives it distinction from their previous album, the word-of-mouth success Oh My God, Charlie Darwin!, and adds tactile weight to clarinet moans and harmonies that might otherwise waft away.
