Family Tree Singer/songwriter Derek Archambault is no stranger to the spotlight; he has spent the last 4 years on tour with progressive hardcore/punk band Defeater, and has had a solo project called Alcoa going for even longer. After countless years of keeping Alcoa on the backburner, this project will finally have a debut full-length album see the light of day in 2013. released February 13, 2013.

The 11-song debut album from Defeater frontman Derek Archambault. Not unlike earlier Ryan Adams and Rocky Votolato efforts, Bone & Marrow is country-tinged with pop sensibilities; full of songs about life, love and regret. Also prevalent on the album is the addition of instrumentation like upright bass, banjo, fiddle, pedal steel, piano/organ, and charming guy/girl dueling vocals (featuring Archambault's longtime girlfriend, Alyssa Eygnor). Release is a cardboard bi-fold with a fold out poster/lyrics sheet.

I Don’t Mind essentially became the biggest hit from that album to the delight of people not into hardcore and to the ire of long time Defeater fans and Hardcore purists now dealing with these new fans. It would not have been until this year, 2 years since the release of Empty Days, and almost 5 years since Travels that Archambault would release a full length album showcasing his talent as a solo songwriter. Bone and Marrow is a spectacular display of Archambault’s capability as a musician as it is a surprisingly solid album

Bone & Marrow comes with eleven softly strummed songs that have an Americana vibe going on. A couple of them are equipped with a full band backing Archambault ( Limbs, Rilke ), others are stripped all the way down. And while I admire the guy for daring to leave the loud guitars behind, the songs on Bone & Marrow sound like they were written by someone who has a very fixed idea of what these kind of songs should sound like. And so you get eleven songs that sound very alike and tend to get kinda whiney. It just proves that those guys know next to nothing about singer/songwriters. It has more in common with Josh Ritter’s earlier wor. t’s just not as good.
