Don Cherry's three albums for Blue Note weren't quite as groundbreaking as some of his later world fusion sessions, when he truly found his own voice and vision. But they're all excellent examples of the kinetic, fire-breathing free jazz he initially pursued after leaving Ornette Coleman's group, and they succeeded in establishing him as a formidable composer, bandleader, and theorist in his own right - not just Ornette's trusty sidekick. Compositionally, Cherry also proved himself no slouch; the "Complete Communion" suite later became a favored playground for Ken Vandermark's DKV Trio, which revived the piece in the late '90s.

Complete Communion is a 1966 album by American jazz composer Don Cherry, his debut as a bandleader and his first release on Blue Note Records. Each side of the original LP were suites, side-long compositions working with several themes. Critics have proposed this recording as an important innovation in the free jazz of the time, introducing "an alternative both to athematic improvising and to monothematic pieces".

Donald Eugene Cherry (November 18, 1936 – October 19, 1995) was an American jazz trumpeter. Cherry had a long association with saxophonist Ornette Coleman, which began in the late 1950s. Cherry was also a pioneer in world fusion music in the 1960s and 1970s. Cherry was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to a mother of Choctaw descent through his maternal grandmother, and an African-American father. His mother and grandmother played piano and his father played trumpet.

To place Monk’s Blue Note recordings below Maiden Voyage, Song for my Father, Idle Moments, etc. seems perverse – superb albums but Monk lays out the templat. eply. November 30, 2015 at 4:23 pm. Monk is a genius, but the early Blue Note albums are not his finest work, much of that came later for other label.
