David Roger Johansen (sometimes spelled David Jo Hansen; born January 9, 1950) is an American singer, songwriter and actor. He is best known as a member of the seminal proto-punk band the New York Dolls. He is also known for his work under the pseudonym Buster Poindexter. Johansen was born in the New York City borough of Staten Island, New York, to a librarian mother, Helen, and an insurance sales representative father who had previously sung opera. Johansen's family was Catholic.

Johansen is always an engaging live performer, but he was absolutely on fire this night, and all 18 tracks are absolute scorchers. Split about equally between solo songs, New York Dolls classics ("Looking for a Kiss," with guest guitar by former bandmate Sylvain Sylvain is particularly brutal) and a wild selection of covers ranging from Sandie Shaw's "Girl Don't Come" to Bonnie Tyler's then-current hit "It's a Heartache.

In Style is the second solo album released by (then-)former lead singer of the New York Dolls, David Johansen. It was released in 1979 on Blue Sky Records. Consequently, In Style – featuring more pop-style songs such as "Melody" and "Swaheto Woman" – was designed to be more commercial.

Johansen did release a limited and promotional live album, The David Johansen Group Live in 1978, but the album was not officially released until 1993. Additionally, by the time Live It Up was released, various bootlegs of Johansen's first band, the New York Dolls, were being heavily traded (an official live album would eventually be released in 1984). The impact of the New York Dolls, as both an influential band and as a live act, was becoming a legend in the late-1970s and early-1980s when Johansen was trying to start his solo career

Initially, the group was composed of singer David Johansen, guitarists Johnny Thunders and Rick Rivets, bass guitarist Arthur Killer Kane, the original lineups first performance was on Christmas Eve 1971 at a homeless shelter, the Endicott Hotel. After getting a manager and attracting some music industry interest, the New York Dolls got a break when Rod Stewart invited them to open for him at a London concert. Since 1977, this song has been covered numerous times and it appeared on the 1978 live album by David Johansen of the New York Dolls, The David Johansen Group Live. Country rock group Dave & Sugar released a cover in 1981, trick Pony covered it on the album R. I. D. E. and released its version in 2005, peaking at on the same chart. A version of the song appears on Arab Straps Ten Years of Tears, gene Pitney recorded a version on his 2003 album, Blue Angel - The Bronze Sessions.
