Recorded in 1991 by BBC Television, Klaus Tennstedt's stirring performance with the London Symphony Orchestra of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 8 in E flat major, the so-called "Symphony of a Thousand," is a treasure that has been missing from the catalog far too long. This live recording documents one of the most exciting performances of this work, and the combination of artists for this occasion is felicitous.

Klaus Tennstedt, who became the London Philharmonic Orchestra's music director in 1983, recorded the complete Mahler symphonies with the orchestra between 1977 and 1986. A recording of the First Symphony in 1977 left critics underwhelmed, but recordings of the Fifth and Ninth won considerable plaudits. 8 - Студийный альбом от Gustav Mahler, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Klaus Tennstedt. The London Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO) is a British Orchestra and a one of five permanent symphony orchestras based in London. It was founded by the conductors Sir Thomas Beecham and Malcolm Sargent in 1932 as a rival to the existing London Symphony and BBC Symphony Orchestras. The founders' ambition was to build an orchestra the equal of any European or American rival. Between 1932 and the Second World War the LPO was widely judged to have succeeded in this regard

Mahler conducted the premiere of his Symphony No. 7 in Prague in 1908. A few weeks later he conducted it in Munich and the Netherlands. Both the audience and the performers at the premiere were confused by the work, and it was not well received. It remained for a while as one of Mahler's least appreciated works, often accused of incoherence. Klaus Tennstedt with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Michael Tilson Thomas with the San Francisco Symphony. Winner of two Grammy Awards for Best Orchestral Performance and Best Classical Album. Michael Tilson Thomas also recorded this symphony with London Symphony Orchestra in 1999. Hans Zender with the hester Saarbrücken. 6. Klaus Tennstedt & London Philharmonic Orchestra. Mahler: Symphony No. Waltraud Meier, London Philharmonic Choir, Klaus Tennstedt, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Eton College Boys' Choir & Michael Oliver. 1, "Titan" & Lieder Eines Fahrenden Gesellen. Thomas Hampson, Klaus Tennstedt & London Philharmonic Orchestra. Beethoven: Symphony No. 9, "Choral". Lucia Popp, Klaus Tennstedt & London Philharmonic Orchestra. 4 In G Major.

Tennstedt, like Wilhelm Furtwängler before him, much preferred live performance to recording: he thrived on contact with a hall full of eager listeners, the stimulus of the unique, unrepeatable event. His studio recordings of Mahler rarely, if ever, come near the incandescent excitement of his LPO concerts. This Brahms 1, from a 1990 Festival Hall concert, benefits from these factors. The opening has tragic intensity - the falling sevenths as desolate as I have ever heard them, the dynamic range exceptionally wide (a Tennstedt trademark)
