Herbie Hancock biography Herbert Jeffrey "Herbie" Hancock - Born April 12, 1940 (Chicago, USA). With a career that covers half of the 20th Century, and shows no sign of slowing down as we move further into the 21st, Herbie Hancock is one of the major music figures of our time. Within the world of progressive jazz/rock fusion he is topped only by Miles Davis when it comes to musical vision, but a bit ahead of Miles and all the rest when it comes to composition and soloing ability. In 83 Hancock made a big splash again when joined with Bill Laswell to produce an album of op. Once again Herbie was ahead of the game, but not for long as the constantly shifting world of hip-hop soon left him behind. Since the late 80s Hancock has continued to enjoy great success in a wide variety of styles including traditional jazz, drumnbass, neo-soul, techno, hip-hop and modern pop.

Secrets (Herbie Hancock album). The album clearly followed from its predecessor Man-Child. As ever, Paul Jackson's basslines were critical, and the other regular member Bennie Maupin continued to provide most of the solos alongside Hancock. Man-Child had seen the addition of electric guitar to Hancock's sound, and Secrets saw the guitar's place in the arrangements rise to crucial importance throughout. The flamboyant rhythm guitar contributions of top Motown session musician Wah Wah Watson are a particularly notable feature of the album.

Pianist, keyboardist, and composer Herbie Hancock is one of the all-time jazz greats. Born in Chicago, Illinois on April 12, 1940, he began studying piano at the age of 7 and became interested in jazz during high school. In his college years, he was torn between a career in engineering and his love of music. 10 – TAKIN’ OFF (1962) Takin’ Off is the sturdy hard-bop debut album by Hancock, recorded when he was only 22 years old. Released on Blue Note Records, it showcased his precocious skills as a musician, bandleader, and composer. 8 – MR. HANDS (1980) Unjustly overlooked upon its original release, Mr. Hands is now recognized as the best album from a period in Hancock’s career that was marked by lackluster electric and disco-influenced releases.
