The Essential Jimi Hendrix Volume Two is a follow up compilation album to The Essential Jimi Hendrix (1978). The UK release also contained a 7-inch 33 1⁄3 rpm one-sided EP of the Jimi Hendrix Experience performing the song "Gloria", that had been included with the first US Essential release. In the US in 1989, the two albums were combined for the CD release The Essential Jimi Hendrix Volumes One and Two. All of the Essential albums have been replaced by later compilations.

The Berkeley shows by Jimi Hendrix are fairly well known because not only were the shows filmed, but they have been bootlegged pretty extensively over the years, as well. Live at Berkeley: 2nd Show marks the first official release of this material, and, like its predecessor, Blue Wild Angel: Live at the Isle of Wight, the show has its strengths and weaknesses. Things start loose, very loose, on "Pass It On," which is actually the music from "Straight Ahead" with some off the cuff lyrics, then into "Hey Baby (New Rising Sun)

The Community Theatre, part of the Berkeley High School in California, was selected for two performances on Memorial Day, 30th May 1970, even though students across the country had been protesting strongly for some time about the Vietnam War. Earlier that month in Berkeley, 3,000 of them had also violently objected to the fencing-off of the Peoples Park, a vacant plot of land on the campus which the students had cleaned up. The Governor of California, Ronald Reagan, had called in the national Guard and thirty students were injured; one was killed and one blinded  . Recorded Live at the Community Theatre, Berkeley, California 30th may 1970 7:30pm show. Jimi Hendrix - guitar and vocals Mitch Mitchel - drums Billy Cox - bass. Live At Berkeley is a music live recording by JIMI HENDRIX (ve Rock) released in 2003 on cd, lp, vinyl and/or cassette. An excellent track indeed which will see the light on the very good posthumous "Rainbow Bridge" album. As usual with Hendrix concerts, the second half will just be phenomenal.

Jimi Hendrix - Berkeley 1st Show - Complete Soundboard (ATM-0256/257). Berkeley Community Theatre, Berkeley, California, USA Saturday 30 May 1970 first show. Jimi Hendrix vocals and guitar. Billy Cox bass and vocals. This set is an uprade of ATM-0123/24 The Berkeley Concerts, now presenting the entire show in continuous uniform soundboard quality ("Star spangled banner" & "Purple haze" were completely missing from the older versions of the soundboard tape and the ATM discs as well as the start of both "Foxy lady" & "Freedom" and without the distortion audible on the previous ATM.

The sound is great, the groove is great and this album, recorded only a few months after Live at the Fillmore (on New Years' Eve) really gives us a chance to talk about one aspect of Jimi that is rarely discussed - namely, how well his sidemen performed. Stone Free is the first song of the Fillmore two disc set and five months later Jimi cut the same song with a different drummer on Berkeley.

Notes

The Community Theatre, part of the Berkeley High School in California, was selected for two performances on Memorial Day, 30th May 1970, even though students across the country had been protesting strongly for some time about the Vietnam War. Earlier that month in Berkeley, 3,000 of them had also violently objected to the fencing-off of the Peoples Park, a vacant plot of land on the campus which the students had cleaned up. The Governor of California, Ronald Reagan, had called in the national Guard and thirty students were injured; one was killed and one blinded. Tension between the students and campus authorities was high.

As Jimi arrived at the 3,400-seat venue, the unrest continued. Not surprisingly, the tickets for the concerts had quickly sold out. Over 1,000 fans had been turned away. Desperate to hear Jimi, some scaled the walls and tried to enter via the roof while others threw rocks at the lucky ticket holders arriving for the first concert.
