Russell Conwell Hoban (February 4, 1925 – December 13, 2011) was an American expatriate writer. His works span many genres, including fantasy, science fiction, mainstream fiction, magical realism, poetry, and children's books. He lived in London, England, from 1969 until his death. Hoban was born in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, just outside Philadelphia, to Jewish immigrants from Ostrog (now in Ukraine).

Russell Hoban, an illustrator and would-be artist, was decorated for bravery against the Nazis. After returning to New York he found success with stories for children. He then moved to England and achieved cult status with his novel Riddley Walker. Now 77, he aims to write a book each year. The sheets of yellow paper and the London Underground repeatedly feature in Hoban's writing and the message was left as part of a coordinated commemoration by Hoban's fans of the writer's 77th birthday. Yellow sheets with quotations written on them were also left, among other places, at a secondhand bookshop in North Carolina, on a tube train in Melbourne and on a bench in a shopping arcade in Taegu, South Korea.
